“Cancer is a hard battle to fight alone, but having someone to pick you up when you fall, stand by your side through every appointment and delivery of bad news, is priceless.” – Aimee, cancer survivor
I heard about it, we all heard about it – the Pink October – the infamous cancer month. How much in depth that we know about it? What it is all about? How do we join in and ‘celebrate’ Pink October?
Do you know that breast cancer afflicts an estimated figure of more than ONE MILLION women in the world each year and is the 2nd leading cause of cancer deaths among women worldwide, second to lung cancer? And do you know it is the most common form of cancer affecting women in Malaysia? About one in 19 women in this country are at risk, compared to one in eight in Europe and the United States.
As we are welcoming October, it is well-known that every year in this month everyone worldwide is celebrating the Pink October in commemoration of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. All efforts are devoted to increasing attention and support for the awareness, early detection and treatment as well as palliative care of this disease.
This year, it is extra special for the Wirdora team itself as we are putting something special to show support and instill awareness to all the ladies, specifically, and to everyone else to really appreciate and lionize the Pink October campaign straight from everyone’s compassionate heart.
I happened to know a lot of strong mothers and even young girls who suffered with breast cancer, and it was not a beautiful path. A friend, who is a cancer survivor once told me,
“Chemotherapy and radiotherapy are ugly. I don’t think it is fair for anyone to go through such harsh struggles, even if that person is my worst enemy!”
That was how horrifying the experience was, and some has survived while many others lost their battles with cancer.
I’m not a medical expert to share with you about what breast cancer is, how we can avoid it and how the treatment should be. Thanks to Mr Google, I’m sure it can be a lot of help to get such information.
On the other hand, I’m here to promote awareness about the cancer.
Dear Wirdora lovers and my avid readers,
In the spirit of Pink October, I’m giving a shout out to all women and everyone out there to let’s recognize how important Breast Cancer Awareness is to our community. Getting involved in any movement directly may seem overwhelming to some, but showing support for breast cancer patients and survivors is actually easier than one may think. So, here’s some points on how you can show your support to the Pick October Campaign.
#1 Raise Awareness
Anyone can be affected by cancer. In fact, the majority of patients never expected to receive a cancer diagnosis until it happened. Early detection can help fight the disease. You can help to spread awareness by telling friends and family to go mammograms. Educated society helps toward greater defense against the cancer.
#2 Give Donation to Research Initiatives
Research is critical to finding a cure, prevention methods, and more effective treatment options. We might not be a researcher but we can always contribute to fund various researchers. Give donations. With your donations, you can give a gift in honor of a survivor, loved one, and to help those who are still struggling with cancer. Through the generosity of people like you, organizations that work with breast cancer patients can continue assisting women and men who are battling breast cancer.
#3 Volunteer to Help Cancer Patients
Sometimes asking for help can be hard. For those who know someone battling breast cancer, find a way to make their life easier without them asking. Whether it is offering to walk their dog, drive them to their doctor’s appointment, or preparing frozen meals, simple acts can make a huge difference. By volunteering your time with reputable organizations, you are helping women and men prevent, battle, and survive breast cancer!
#4 Promote Healthy Lifestyle
Through healthy living, personal risk of cancer is reduced. Develop a healthy environment and practice healthy eating habits. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Consider having healthy food options. Have courage and encourage others to quit smoking.
#5 Wear pink
The pink ribbon is an international symbol for breast cancer. Wearing a pink ribbon, or a pink outfit, is a simple way to express moral support for those who have been diagnosed with breast cancer. Showing support all of the time is great, but there is a national initiative to wear pink for the whole October month. Get a pink outfit ready and encourage friends, family, colleagues, and neighbours to do the same!
The least, you could get yourself a pink ribbon that symbolizes the Pink October support. The pink ribbon represents fear of breast cancer, hope for the future, and the charitable goodness of people and businesses who publicly support the breast cancer movement. It is intended to evoke solidarity with women who currently have breast cancer.
